Getting to know our Graphics and Communications Manager

It's easy to get to know your direct neighbour at work but it isn’t always possible to get to know your colleagues in a Global company such as Webtec.  We would like to add a new regular feature to Blue Print where we talk to our colleagues throughout the World to get to know them a little better.

Sam has kindly agreed to be the first to accept the ‘Getting To Know’ challenge.  Read on to meet Sam.

Name
Sam Thompson

What is your job title?
Graphics and Communications Manager

Can you describe your role in less than 25 words?
To manage and produce Webtecs’s Marketing & Communications content by promoting the Webtec brand, our products, services and the company’s vision and values.

How long have you worked at Webtec?
I joined the company on the 4th of September 1997.

Outside of work do you have any hobbies/interests?
I am secretary of my local football team, Somersham Town. Maybe not so much a hobby but a long-term community service sentence that you can’t ever leave. I do enjoy it and it’s a big part of my life outside of Webtec.

I enjoy going to the cinema, before lockdown myself, two friends and one of the friend’s daughter who is my goddaughter used to go almost every week.

My biggest hobby/interest or even obsession is collecting Transformers figures. I have been doing this since about 2012 and this forms my biggest leisure interest. My second bedroom has been converted into my ‘office’ sorry toy room where I do spend a lot of time when I’m at home. Either taking toy photos for my Instagram account (Samsformers), watching toy reviews or joining in podcasts and video hangouts with the members of the toy groups I’m part of. In 2018 I travelled to Chicago for a Transformers convention called TFCon. This year was cancelled so the next one is planned for October 2021 in Baltimore that I plan on attending. The word ‘geek’ is well and truly part of my description.

Favourite football team?
Manchester United & the Miami Dolphins

Favourite film?
‘Star Wars’ (A New Hope).
Close runners up would be ‘Back to the Future’, ‘A Few Good Men’ and ‘The Transformers’ animated movie from 1986. This could be a very long list.

Favourite holiday destination?
There are a few choices here, Florida last year was fantastic because of the people I went with and the amount we managed to see and do. This included my trip to Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge which is one of the geekiest days I have ever had. But I think the place I have visited that I had always wanted to visit was San Francisco. I was lucky enough to visit San Francisco in 2017 while going to visit my Brother in San Diego. While I was there, I was able to tick off one of the items at the very top of my bucket list which was to visit Alcatraz. One of my most memorable days! Other honourable mentions would be Miami, Rome, Vegas and New York. I have been very lucky in being able to visit some wonderful places.

Galaxys edge

Do you have any phobias?
Snakes, can’t stand them. Deep water, I like being in a swimming pool where I can touch the bottom but the idea of being out on a boat with vast amounts of water underneath doesn’t sit well with me.

Favourite and worst subject/s at school?
History was one of my favourites. I did a term of technical drawing which I really enjoyed but never did that again, they decided to give me textiles instead. Worst subject would probably be Geography and or Biology, I never really got into either of them.

Dream dinner, you + 3 guests (dead or alive)
Kiefer Sutherland, he is by far my favourite actor and the person I would probably like to meet the most. I was lucky enough to see him in concert in Cambridge just before Lockdown.
Sir Alex Ferguson, greatest football manager of all time
Harrison Ford, who wouldn’t want to have dinner with Han Solo
