How to ensure tamperproof hydraulic shear valves in safety-critical applications

Designing a hydraulic circuit for safety-critical equipment means ensuring no one gets hurt by accidentally operating the control valve. Safety is often part of the mission statement at companies using hydraulics, justifying the use of zero-leak rotary shear directional control valves. A recent example involving oil well safety equipment supports this suggestion.

To ensure extra safety beyond zero-leak capability, the equipment’s design engineer wanted a lockable, tamperproof valve. Webtec’s team of hydraulic specialists presented the designer with two optimal options: a button lock or key lock. For this application he chose the button lock, which features a unique locking plunger. After moving the valve handle, the plunger auto-locks the handle into position. An operative must pull the plunger release manually to disengage from the lock position. The result? A safe and reliable solution courtesy of a custom-configured Webtec 180 series zero-leak rotary shear valve.
